History, architecture and the vibrant Katutura township — with the inspiring Penduka women’s project.
Windhoek City
With an estimated 500,000 inhabitants, Windhoek is the largest city in the country and somehow the only “city”. It lies at 1,652 m above sea level in a valley surrounded by the Eros Mountains in the east, the Auas Mountains in the south and the Khomas Highlands in the west — bordering the world’s oldest desert, the Namib.
Windhoek is a very clean city with a slightly provincial feel. In recent years the capital has changed a lot with modern new buildings such as the Independence Museum and the large Swapo Party Headquarters, while German colonial-era buildings still add to its charm.
A ~3-hour drive through the capital. We start at the Schwerinsburg viewpoint with background on Windhoek and Namibia, then show historical buildings such as the Christ Church, the Alte Feste, the German Imperial Secondary School, the Independence Museum, the anti-apartheid and Sam Nujoma statues, the Ink Palace, the old State House, Independence Avenue, the Turnhalle and the train station, ending in Katutura.
A ~3-hour drive through Katutura with a visit to the Penduka Women’s Project. Learn about local craftsmanship — glass-bead making, pottery, batik and embroidery. “Penduka” means “women, wake up and take the initiative”; the project supports disadvantaged women with training and income. Handmade pieces are for sale in the shop (credit cards accepted).
