With an estimated 450,000 inhabitants, Namibia’s capital Windhoek is the largest city in the country and somehow the only “city”. It lies at an altitude of 1,652 meters above sea level in a valley surrounded by the Eros Mountains in the east, the Auas Mountains in the south and the Khomas Highlands in the west. This mountain range borders at the oldest desert in the world – the Namib!
Windhoek is a very clean city and feels a bit provincial. In recent years the capital has changed a lot with numerous modern new buildings, such as the Independence Museum and the gigantic State House.
However, you can also still find some buildings from the German colonial period, which still contribute to the charm of the city today.
