The Erongo Mountains is a 130 million year old volcanic ruin with breathtaking rock formations and landscapes. 130 million years ago the crust of the earth in the vicinity of today`s Erongo massif cracked.

and heaved and the surrounding areas were flooded by streams of lava. The volcano remained actif for the ensuing 20 million years. Then the volcano collapsed forming a large caldera at its centre and offering a mystic view of huge granite boulders today. The San People also seemed fascinated by this landscape and settled here about some 2000 years ago.

Driving time: Approx. 6 hours on about 450 km tarred and 100 km gravel roads.

If time permits enjoy a hike to many rock paintings in this area or join a guided tour.

The San Rock Art Paintings – One of the San shamans’ tasks was to make rain. The San thought of the rain as an animal. The shamans would capture this imaginary animal, lead it to the place where they wanted rain and kill it.

Well, that`s one interpretation of San rock art. We invite you to interpret the paintings in your very own way.
